Picnic

Sunday, September 27th, 2009 | Chris Worfolk | No Comments

I finally made it over to the A-Soc picnic on Woodhouse Moor to find a rather nice turnout and, amusingly, A-Soc members trying to participate in sporting activities ;) . We spent a while longer in the park chatting before heading over to The Old Bar for what we expected would be a few drinks – 10:30 in the evening, several drinks and a jazz band later and I finally left. Crazy times.

All night debate

Friday night saw us to take the street outside the union for all night debate in an attempt to talk to even more students and had out some free hot drinks to people in need of one. It wasn’t as fast moving as it is during Rationalist Week but we got some quite long quality conversations and chatted to some great people so it was well worth it.

Day at the museum

Friday saw A-Soc hit Leeds City Museum to take a look round the exhibit, notably the first edition of Origin of Species. We spent a good hour or two looking round the museum before they kicked us out, which is enough time to get round most of the stuff anyway. Unfortunately we forgot to get a group photo on the steps but there will be plenty of other opportunities no doubt.

Freshers’ week

Sunday, September 27th, 2009 | Chris Worfolk | No Comments

With the new academic year kicking off, A-Soc spent the week outside the union telling people about the society and trying to drum up new members. While we had some problems with being moved around, staff shortages and the usual problems you have to deal with, the week was overall rather successful and we signed up plenty of new members.

The long awaited return of Tuesdays

This Tuesday saw the long awaited return of Atheist Society Tuesdays at the union. We kicked things off with an EGM to sort out some administration issues and then headed down to The Old Bar for the social, at which we had a suprisingly good turn out of new people. I also tried the new Old Bar food menu which was very nice, though it isn’t budget so you would expect it to be decent quality.

Monday saw the start of freshers’ week as we began the recruitment drive for members this year. The first days days of the fair have been reasonably successful, especially with myself and Zoltan speaking on the welcome stage on Tuesday lunch time.

International freshers’ fair

Friday saw international freshers’ fair, a special societies fair put on for international students before the hordes of regular students arrive. While there weren’t a great deal of students there and we still had a lot of prep work to do it never the less served as quite a good practice run for next week.

Calling past members

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 | Leeds Atheist Society | No Comments

Leeds Atheist Society is now entering into its fourth year of existence and its fourth committee are embarking on an exciting and challenging programme of events and campaigns.

One of the effects of the society reaching the grand old age of four is that many of our members in the first three years have graduated university, moved away from Leeds or have simply lost touch with the society. This is something the society would like to rectify and to achieve this A-Soc is launchin an alumni programme to help maintain contacts and develop a longer term association with our past members.

As the almuni co-ordinator, I would like to extend an invitation to all our previous members to get in touch via the Contact Us page. The scheme is free and open to all past members.

Benefits of joining the alumni programme include a termly news letter, access to society events and socials, a dedicated section of the website and the opportunity to take part in a discretionary donation sceheme.

I hope to hear from as many of you as possible, if only to let us know how you are getting on since leaving the society.

Something good is going to happen

Here’s me busting a groove earlier today.

I spent the day on set filming an Atheist Society parody of Utah Saints’ Something Good ‘08, a little idea I had had for an intro video for the society this year.

It was actually a really quick shoot – we didn’t kick off until 4pm and we were finished by about 8pm. Of course this is where the real world begins – since getting home I’ve spent nearly three hours doing the pre-editing for the camera I have – we still have all the editing to do on top of that and that is just one of three cameras we were using!

Never the less the film is now in the can so with a little bit of magic editing and after effects we should have something pretty good.

Till the steak runs dry

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009 | Chris Worfolk | No Comments

Last night saw the usual weekly A-Soc summer social at the Cuthbert Brodrick for much steak and drinking. As ever a good time was bad by all, except Rich, who we managed to drive crazy with talk about the logo. On the plus side however, Kate and Steven are now “official” according to Rich.

Interestingly Sophie couldn’t make it and Paul cancelled on us at the last minute leading us to the conclusion that Paul is actually in control of, and indeed has been in control of, the society all along through his puppets, myself, Norm and now Sophie. We always suspected, but never guessed…
